The Bouncing DVD Logo in Pop Culture: From The Office to the Super Bowl
For a piece of software whose entire job was stopping televisions from damaging themselves, the bouncing DVD logo has had a remarkable second life. It has anchored a sitcom cold open, headlined a Super Bowl ad watched by around a hundred million people, been turned into a video game twice, and been hidden inside the world’s most-used search box.
Here is where it has actually turned up — and what happened each time.
The Office Scene That Started It
The moment that turned an idle animation into a shared reference is the cold open of “Launch Party”, season four of The Office (US), first aired 11 October 2007.
Michael Scott delivers a presentation in the conference room. Behind him, on a television nobody is supposed to be watching, a DVD screensaver drifts back and forth. One by one the staff stop listening and start tracking it, waiting for it to land cleanly in a corner. When it finally does, the room erupts — and Michael, oblivious, takes the ovation as a response to his own ideas.
The logo was not there during filming. It was added in post-production, after the scene was shot. Everyone cheering is reacting to a screen that did not yet have a bouncing logo on it.
A Super Bowl Ad, With No Ad In It
On 13 February 2022, during Super Bowl LVI, Coinbase ran sixty seconds of a colour-shifting QR code drifting across a black screen. No voiceover. No celebrity. No product shot until the last moment. It was the DVD screensaver, wearing a QR code.
It worked far too well. The landing page reportedly took more than 20 million hits in a single minute and collapsed under the load — which promptly became part of the story. The app went from roughly 186th to 2nd in the App Store.
You can rebuild this in about a minute. Upload a QR code as your image, drop the speed right down, set the background to black, and export. That is all the original was.
It Became a Game, Twice
There is a point at which a screensaver stops being a thing you wait through and becomes a thing you play. The bouncing logo crossed it twice.
In February 2019, indie developer RoomsForRockets put Bouncing DVD: The Game on Steam, for free. There is no scoring system to speak of and nothing to beat. The game is the screensaver — that is the joke, and enough people were in on it that the thing holds a positive rating.
Six years later it turned up as a reward. Stimulation Clicker, Neal Agarwal’s 2025 browser game about internet overstimulation, makes the DVD screensaver the very first thing you unlock — a point for every bounce, and you can buy more logos to raise the rate. A screensaver invented to stop you looking at a screen, repurposed as the opening incentive in a game about not being able to stop.
Google Hid One Inside Search
In May 2021, Google added an Easter egg: search for the right phrase on a desktop browser and the Google logo detaches from the page and starts bouncing, changing colour as it goes.
It is the same joke, told by the company most people use to look things up — and unlike the others on this list, you can trigger it yourself in about five seconds.

Make Your Own
Everything on this page is somebody else’s logo, moving at somebody else’s speed. The Coinbase spot is the tell: strip the idea back far enough and it is just an image, a direction, and a wall to bounce off. That part was never the hard bit.
Upload a logo, a photo, or a QR code — or type text and let it glow. Then set it up the way you want it: speed, size, background, up to ten objects at once, landscape or portrait or square.
When it looks right, take it with you. Export an animated GIF for a chat thread, MP4 or WebM up to 1080p for a stream or a presentation, or a single standalone HTML file that loops forever on a lobby screen with no internet connection at all.
No watermark, no account, no cost. Your images never leave your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which episode of The Office has the bouncing DVD logo?
It is the cold open of "Launch Party", from season four, which first aired on 11 October 2007. The episode originally went out as an hour-long instalment, so different listings number it as episode 3, 5 or 6 of the season — but the title is unambiguous. Michael gives a presentation while the entire office watches a DVD screensaver on the TV behind him, waiting for it to land in a corner. When it finally does, the room erupts, and Michael assumes the cheer is for him.
Was the bouncing DVD logo real when they filmed The Office?
No. The logo was added in post-production, after the scene was shot. The cast were reacting to a screen that did not yet have a bouncing logo on it — which makes the timing of that collective cheer a piece of acting, not luck.
What was the bouncing QR code Super Bowl ad?
That was Coinbase, during Super Bowl LVI on 13 February 2022. The 60-second spot was a colour-shifting QR code drifting across a black screen — no voiceover, no celebrities, no branding until the end — styled directly on the DVD screensaver. Scanning it offered new users free bitcoin. The landing page reportedly took more than 20 million hits in a minute and fell over, and the app climbed from around 186th to 2nd in the App Store.
Where else has the bouncing DVD logo shown up?
The four best-documented appearances are the cold open of The Office's "Launch Party" in 2007, Coinbase's bouncing QR code at Super Bowl LVI in 2022, an Easter egg hidden inside Google Search since 2021, and two video games — Bouncing DVD: The Game on Steam in 2019 and Stimulation Clicker in 2025, which makes the screensaver its first unlockable. Beyond those it has been a recurring meme format since roughly 2016, mostly built around the moment the logo lands in a corner.
Who invented the bouncing DVD screensaver?
No individual is credited. The animation is documented as arriving with the DVD format itself in 1997, associated with the DVD Forum and the DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation rather than any named designer. Claims you will see online attributing it to specific engineers at particular manufacturers are not backed by any source we could find.
Is there a bouncing DVD logo video game?
More than one. Indie developer RoomsForRockets released the free Bouncing DVD: The Game on Steam on 10 February 2019. More recently the 2025 browser game Stimulation Clicker made the DVD screensaver its very first unlockable, awarding points for each bounce.
